Moving beyond the traditional moral condemnation of insolvents, the city’s specialized insolvency court introduced professional procedures that restored trust between creditors and debtors – showing how smart legal institutions can foster sustainable economic growth.

Drawing on hundreds of archival cases, the book provides new empirical grounding for long-standing theories about the role of law in economic development.
