The city of Amsterdam occupies a prominent role in our research. Two of our team members completed their PhD’s at the UvA, while both principal investigators used the city as case study for our own doctoral dissertations. Libraries have been written about the rise of the city on the Amstel as a global economic power. For the purpose of this website, we have tried to be selective, discussing the most important governmental institutions, legal structures, as well as the principal economic institutions and phenomena constituting their context. A selection of sources for further reading allows those interested to delve deeper into Amsterdam’s fascinating history. As we continue to fill out this website, the chosen format will allow for an ever more extensive comparison of cities and their legal and institutional structures.

Later this year, a richly illustrated book titled ‘Palace of Commerce’ will appear with the Dutch publisher Verloren. Written by dr. Maurits den Hollander and prof. em. Bob Wessels, it will more elaborately present the principal legal and governmental institutions of Amsterdam in an accessible narrative. More news on this will follow soon!
